Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro (3905 N Lincoln)
Catch this powerful solo piece before its Off-Broadway debut at Theatre Row in NYC, in an intimate performance at a pop-up theater in one of Chicago's legendary Irish pubs.
In Undesirable Secrets, Rodolfo Alvarado brings to life the gripping true story of Anthony Acevedo, a Mexican American WWII medic and Holocaust survivor—one of 350 American GIs secretly sent to Berga, a Nazi slave labor camp. What Anthony endured there was horrific—but what he survived before Berga, at the hands of his own father, is what truly haunted him.
Told with raw emotion and piercing clarity, this one-man play dares to ask: What truths do we bury in order to survive?
Texas journalist Ramona Logan recently wrote: “The set of Undesirable Secrets is simple: three chairs and a table. But the performance is explosive, with a gut-wrenching, moving delivery that tugs at your soul.”
Audiences across the country—from San Antonio to Detroit—have risen in standing ovation. Now, Chicago gets the chance to experience it before the show makes its Off-Broadway premiere on November 1.
Written and performed by Rodolfo Alvarado, an award-winning playwright, poet, and performer originally from Lubbock, Texas, and directed by longtime collaborator William Doll, Undesirable Secrets is as deeply personal as it is historically urgent. Pre- and post-show music created exclusively for this show is written & performed by Chicago's own Spencer Ball
